Last week, I had the honor of partnering with Lionsgate for the LA opening of Fairyland. Produced by Oscar winner Sofia Coppola, and based on the bestselling memoir by the same name, Fairyland tells the story of a young girl and her single gay dad in 70s and 80s San Francisco. I attended the premier and a private opening screening. Both nights were filled with emotion, reflection, and community, reminding me exactly why I started Gaddies: to celebrate the real stories of dads everywhere.
I got to be there, but I was there on behalf of all the dads around the world. It was incredible to watch an honest, messy, real story of what gay fatherhood has looked like — and the paths and stories of fatherhood that are never told.
The movie touches upon these themes, and how often the choices we make as parents are a reflection of our own childhood experiences (the good and the bad).
The energy of the audience was incredible. The majority were allies (#GaddyBaddies) there to learn and support — some with an incredible personal connection to the movie, who had dads that came out later in life, and some gaddies like myself who are somewhere on their parenting journey.
It was an honor that Lionsgate saw Gaddies — the community we are building, the quality of that community and our stories — and invited me to join them.
I went to the after party at the iconic Chateau Marmont not knowing anyone (hello anxiety!).
Wearing my Dads of Dorothy tee proved to be an amazing conversation starter and I soon found myself talking with producers and LA folks who were eager to learn more about what I thought about the movie and what we’re building at Gaddies.
While I didn't end up on TMZ (probably a good thing), it was a night with the stars I’ll never forget.
And most importantly, Geena Davis is truly a radiant gift to us all.
Can't make it to the movie but want to learn more about this amazing story?
